Was the mutazili Ibn Abi Dawud who went against Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal in the trial different to the Ibn Abu Dawud who was a hadith scholar & son of the famous hadith scholar Abu Dawood?

Nah, you're thinking about Ibn Abi Du'ad دؤاد, not Ibn Abi Dawudداود.

Also, Abu Dawood is one of Imam Ahmad's main students, so it wouldn't make sense for his son to be a judge at the time of the Mihnah
