I think the confusion is that the creature carrying the earth in ancient Arabian mythology is called Bahamut which could be the Behemoth of the Jewish texts. Therefore I suspect this is an ancient Arabian Jewish tale, it makes sense that the Shia sect believes in its authenticity since they were founded by a Jew from Yemen.
