Cruel killing of tribe of 'Ukl
« on: May 24, 2015, 06:06:41 PM »
Assalamualaikum, shia argues based on this hadith

A group of eight men from the tribe of ‘Ukil came to the Prophet and then they found the climate of Medina unsuitable for them. So, they said, “O Allah’s Messenger! Provide us with some milk.” Allah’s Apostle said, “I recommend that you should join the herd of camels.” So they went and drank the urine and the milk of the camels (as a medicine) till they became healthy and fat. Then they killed the shepherd and drove away the camels, and they became unbelievers after they were Muslims. When the Prophet was informed by a shouter for help, he sent some men in their pursuit, and before the sun rose high, they were brought, and he had their hands and feet cut off. Then he ordered for nails which were heated and passed over their eyes, and whey were left in the Harra (i.e. rocky land in Medina). They asked for water, and nobody provided them with water till they died (Abu Qilaba, a sub-narrator said, “They committed murder and theft and fought against Allah and His Apostle, and spread evil in the land.”) – (Sahih al-Bukhari, volume 4, Book 52, Hadith 261)

They said What kind of evil punishment is this?? Hands and feet were cut off and not given water till they died?

How to answer this? do we find any similar narration in shia books?

Thanks

Hani

Salam,

When I first read this it did surprise me, now you can refer to these links for explanations of why what happened happened:

And:

I will further research this one InshaAllah,

My personal opinion is that I doubt this even happened in the first place, or that it ever happened in the way it was described

Here's some interesting tid-bits, Farid can take a look at these:

Musannaf `Abdul-Razzaq:
Hasan al-Basri denied it
al-Thawri cast doubt on the narrators
This verse was revealed for them

Al-Sunan al-Ma'thourah:
Muthlah(punishment by torture) was forbidden after it

Al-Nasikh wal-Mansoukh:
This was abrogated according to the scholars

Musnad Ahmad:
They declared war on Islam
This was before punishments were prescribed

Bukhari:
Abu Qillabah mentions their crime

Tirmidhi:
The punishment they received was similar to what they did to the shepherds

Wa alaykum alsalam wa rahmatullah,

This hadith has been narrated by three narrators from Anas bin Malik. It is therefore authentic without a doubt and it has been narrated in the Saheehain.

There are narrations that suggest that Yasar, the servant of the Prophet peace be upon him had his arms and legs cut off by them, and had his eyes gauged out, and therefore the punishment that they received as similar.

It is authentically narrated from Mohammad bin Sireen, as Hani quoted above, that this was before the legislation of Hudood.

Allah knows best.

thanks all, but what about this phrase

"They asked for water, and nobody provided them with water till they died"

Is this part of the qisas?

Yes, it is "an eye for an eye" after all, since they left Yasaar to die in that state.
