Title: Evolution of the titles of the Shia sect
Post by: Hani on December 04, 2015, 05:05:05 AM
Salam,

Here are a group of titles that refer to the twelver Shia. However, not all of these were present at the same time, rather each name is a stage from the stages of the evolution of this sect.

1- Shi`atu-`Ali: Or "Shia" was the first name referring to `Ali's supporters and partisans.
2- Saba'iyyah: Followers of Ibn Saba', the first of the religious Shia sects and the foundation of Madhabi Tashayyu`. Extremist Shia were known by this title at this time.
3- Rafidah: This was the third name, awarded to some of the Shia who abandoned Zayd.
4- Ja`fariyyah: After they abandoned Zayd, they went to his nephew  and in the life of Ja`far his followers/companions were called Ja`fariyyah and he disliked this name.
5- Imamiyyah: This name began to appear when the Shia began to debate between themselves as to whether the Imam is divinely appointed or chosen by the people.
6- Qat`iyyah: A group of Shia were awarded this title after they accepted Musa's death and moved on to his sons.
7- Ithna-`Ashariyyah: The last of their titles which most likely appeared after they claimed their 11th Imam had a son.

I believe these titles were created in this order, you guys are free to comment and say your points of view.

Haha yea that works too. tbh even the term waqifah fits twelvers like a glove.
