The Shi'ah when debating on Mut'ah will often bring up the Ahadith of ibn Abbas and Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah when they made the Fatwa that Mut'ah was Halal. Now let's analyse ibn Abbas' Fatwa.

Quote
Narrated Abu Jamra:
I heard Ibn `Abbas (giving a verdict) when he was asked about the Mut'a with the women, and he permitted it (Nikah-al-Mut'a). On that a freed slave of his said to him, "That is only when it is very badly needed and women are scarce." On that, Ibn `Abbas said, "Yes."

- Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5116

So ibn Abbas permitted it on the condition that it was at times of a lack of women or when they were badly needed for various reasons which are quite obvious. So it's clear that when ibn Abbas permitted it it was not under the same conditions nor did it have the same meaning as the Rafidah have it.

Now what did Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah base his Fatwa of off?

Quote
Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah and Salama bin Al-Akwa`:
While we were in an army, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came to us and said, "You have been allowed to do the Mut'a (marriage), so do it."

- Sahih al-Bukhari Hadiths 5117, 5118

So if we were to analyse these Hadiths we would discover that he based his Fatwa off of what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while he was specifically in the army. Which was before Khaybar so we can therefore conclude that he was not aware of this fact.

I don't remember the exact narration but wasn't it Ali ibn Abu Talib (ra) that corrected him.

Please see our article that responds to claims of why some companions accepted mutah:

Most of the companions on the list are falsely accused of accepting mutah. The little section on Jabir shows that he stopped believing in its permissibility as well.
