  for some reason a shia wants to debate me on Mutah, I don't know why me of all people, but I've been busy with exams so will respond to them in due time.

Abu Nadra reported: While I was in the company of Jabir b. Abdullah, a person came to him and said that Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn Zubair differed on the two types of Mut'as (muta of Hajj and muta of women), whereupon Jabir said: We used to do these two during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger, Umar then forbade us to do them, and so we did not revert to them. It's funny because there is even a hadeeth where Asma bint Abi Bakr admits to doing muta.  O you who claim to love the Sahabah, stop insulting them by calling them prostitutes.

As I understand it, the Sunni argument is that it was abolished at Khaybar, right?


And the Shia argument is that it was never abolished except by Umar (who didn't have the right).


The argument of *some* is that it is prostitution which therefore makes most of the Sahabah prostitutes.

Those who say it was prohibited have several opinions on when it was finally prohibited.


Those who say it was allowed differ on whether it was absolutely allowed or only as Rukhsah.


As for it being "prostitution" it should not be called that, it is very similar to it and is a better alternative than prostitution, rather it is known today as Zinah by consensus.

All of the "we practiced Muta in the time of Rasul Allah and Abu Bakr, but stopped during the reign of `Umar" hadeeths come to mind.  If the Prophet banned Muta, they were committing Zinah (Asma bint Abi Bakr, anyone?)  If the Prophet did not ban Muta, then `Umar had no right to and nobody can call it Zinah.

Prohibition didn't reach some people it seems, for instance the prohibition never reached ibn `Abbas but he still permitted it as Rukhsah in extreme cases.
