Shia Sophism

Hossein Ali Montazeri (born 1922, Najafābād, Iran—died Dec. 20, 2009, Qom), Iranian cleric who became one of the highest-ranking authorities in Shīʿite Islam. He was once the designated successor of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Khomeini began "to transfer some of his power" to Montazeri, in 1980. By 1983 "all government offices hung a small picture" of Montazeri next to that of Khomeini. In 1984, Montazeri became a grand ayatollah
In 1988,Montazeri was stripped of his right to succession, and it was Ali Khamenei—a more junior cleric—who succeeded Khomeini upon his death in 1989. Montazeri was among those who criticized Khamenei’s relatively junior status and who argued that his status was not high enough to entitle him to issue fatwas (Islamic legal opinions). As a result of his criticism, Montazeri was under house arrest from 1997 until early 2003.
What happened? Although it is told that it happened due to liberal ideas of Montazeri. But they were already aware of thoose ideas. Something happened that changed shias view about him.
The problem was that he told the truth. He wrote that fadak was not the right or property of hazrat fatima.Shia never tolerated this truth and humiliated their own Ayatullah for that.
Shia try to hide this fact that their top Ayatullah supported sunnis on fadak. When I was in Qom recently, they still refuse to talk about this, even after 25 years.

I thought it was because Montazeri criticized Khomayni for murdering all of his political opponents & peaceful protesters.

Can't even imagine what Fars would look like today if Montazeri had been the Supreme Leader instead of Khamenei. Probably a much more pleasant and safe place to be a Sunni.

Yes, that the reason. Under Khomieini's rule they tortured political prisoners who led a civil war against the government.
