Yahya ibn Ma'in curse Ahmad ibn Hanbal ?

et us see what Ahmad bin Hanbal had said. We find

 • وقال حنبل بن إسحاق: قال أبو عبد الله: إذا اختلف وكيع، وعبد الرحمن فعبد الرحمن أثبت، لأنه أقرب عهداً بالكتاب. «تاريخ بغداد» 10/243.

Ahmad bin Hanbal said that when Waki’i and Abdur Rehman have differences (about a particular narration), then Abdur Rehman is trustworhty, as he was near the time of “Book” [1]

Also,

حدثنا عبد الرحمن ، نا صالح بن أحمد بن حنبل ، قال : قلت لأبي : أيما أثبت عندك عبد الرحمن بن مهدي ، أو وكيع ؟ فقال : عبد الرحمن أقل سقطا من وكيع في سفيان

Salih bin Ahmad bin Hanbal asked his father: Who is more trustworthy to you, Abdur Rehman bin Mahdi or Waki’i? He replied: Abdur Rehman who erred less than Waki’i in narrating from Sufian. [2]

Now

We can clearly see that Ahmad bin Hanbal was giving preference to Abdur Rehman bin Mahdi on Waki’i.

Let us see what Yahya bin Moin said

سمعت يحيى وذكر له عبد الرحمن بن مهدي ووكيع فقال له رجل قوم يقدمون عبد الرحمن بن مهدي فقال يحيى من قدم عبد الرحمن على وكيع فدعا عليه فعليه لعنة الله والملائكة والناس أجمعين

Abdur Rehman bin Mahdi and Waki’i were mentioned in front of Yahya, and a man told him that there are people who prefer Abdur Rehman bin Mahdi. So He said that whosoever prefers Abdur Rehman On Waki’i, I pray that there is Curse of Allah, Angels and all people on him [3]

Since when preferring an alim towards another alim becomes something that is frown upon let alone doing laknat over him?
it's there a hidden context that we dont know about? (shia like to twist and turn the words of the 4 Imams)
ahmad bin hanbal and yahya bin maien are contemporaries, there go on journeys together to gain knowledge from ulama', example Abu Nuaim Fadhl bin Dukayn and Abdul Razzaq Sanaani, i really doubt it if there would have so much difference in grading a person to be as stated above..

Knowing their authenticity is Farid's thing.

Many great contemporaries attacked eachother and got overly sensitive over minor issues as well as jealousy. More importantly, Yahya does not mention Ahmad's name, it could be he didn't know Ahmad held the opinion, on the other hand we have explicit praise from him to Ahmad in other reports.

I've heard worse things said about abu Hanifa, yet we still love him and place him at the top where he rightfully belongs, know the truth to know its people.
