A great theme of Quran is about how God attributes purity to who he pleases and no one has the right but God.  It's not for us to choose our leaders and put them on higher purity scale then others. Rather, God knows them and knows how to manifest them through his revelations.

Due to this, we might be inclined to interpret 33:33 to say out of this nation - God only wishes by the Quran - to attribute purity to Ahlulbayt and no one else.  One can contend that and say what about Isa (a).  The reply can be that, it referred to the nation at the time of the revelation of the verse or the people alive on earth. This too has a slight complex problem, in that Elyas (a) is alive on earth and others are too. Are they not part of the nation in the same way Jesus (a) is part of this nation.

We would have to argue they aren't part of the nation then, and this is not all too far, because they are chosen Guides and Messengers themselves and can't really be put in the category of the followers of Mohammad (s) perhaps. Their path and ascension was already taken, they aren't need of new guidance, even though they did pray behind Mohammad (s) in his Miraaj. That is when Quran talks about a witness from every people, they are witnesses and their people are different then the 13 groups of people in the nation of Mohammad (s) (Mohammad + 12 Imams witnesses to a group of the umma per their times).

An alternative recitation, and we got to remember Arabic grammar rules were not set in stone then, and Quran also broke a lot of the grammar rules that we put in place LATER.  Another possible way is to see the first phrase:

"God only desires to...." to have to designations, and not both to to "You".

The first one can be towards "uncleanness" and it means that God desires to keep only the uncleanness and nothing else from the souls of Ahlulbayt (a) but that.  There is more to it as "yuthhab" can also mean remove or means both, more "make to be away from you", it means whatever blessings they gain, will never be removed from them.

The 2nd line goes to "You" and it would mean that God only desires to purify Ahlulbayt (a) and no one else a certain level of purification. And since higher levels of purification contain lower, it means they have the highest state of purity.

The first line would go in theme with Salawat, that God wishes to bless them with as much blessings as possible, and believers and Angels can participate in that.  It also means a blessing never leaves them and from the perspective of light, no light bestowed upon them every diminishes but only increases. From this perspective more significant then rijs never touching their souls is the fast a blessings never leaves them once God bestows upon them and that God wishes to bless them without end, and the Salawat verse goes well with that. The Salawat verse comes right after telling the wives to guard against God as well.

The question rises, why have the wives been addressed before and after. Well if not after, the before would almost give impression without keeping in mind all that Quran has said about chosen family concept, that wives are part of Ahlulbayt.  But keeping in mind the theme of chosen family, it clearly is not. Aside from that, when switching back to plural female in the line after, it shows it was not the wives addressed at all as part of Ahlulbayt at all. If it was, it would be appropriate to emphasize plural male then. 

The meaning that God wishes with the commands to the wives to purify Ahlulbayt is also problematic for the following reasons:

(1) "The only" would mean the only intention with commands would be to make them completely pure. But purity in Quran is shown as a stage and beginning for something way more and where true life in this world and next really begins. The sustenance of God really starts to bless the soul once that stage is achieved and not to mention paradise.  So even if the rest of Ahlulbayt (a) can take lesson from the commands to wives and apply it to themselves by the fact they are closely related as well, the problem arises, God desires a lot more with the commands then simply to purfy.

(2) The hadithal Kisaa - it would've been appropriate to gather Abbas and his family, Jaffar's family, etc, if the meaning was as Sunnis say. But the fact only those five were addressed per the hadiths, shows it's a chosen family meaning.

(3) The theme of Quran about chosen families and other clear verses about designation like 4:54 with 4:59 and 33:6 and 42:23, we aren't supposed to forget all that, and see this verse in isolation. Keeping all that in mind, we have to see the last part specifically something about the chosen family concept, in this case, we have to keep in mind over all context of whole of Quran over just the mini context of the verse 33:33.  If have attention span of goldfish it will seem like about wives, but if we keep in mind the Quran all together and even the start of the chapter 33:6-8, it's clearly about Ahlulbayt in the chosen sense.

The two possible meanings I provided, I prefer the 2nd. The reason why is that is the noblest thing you can say to any creation.  It's the highest stage of unique honor.  Imam Reda (a) also said that it's a honor unique to them that no one can really deny.  If it was just purity attribute to them and no one else, all Anbiya have that, and Angels as well.

When you recite keeping in mind all the hadiths about Ahlulbayt, this is where Ahlulbayt are addressed directly in Quran and really no where else as Ahlulbayt directly, although different "You" in Quran exists towards them, here, addressed as Ahlulbayt, it's God's words of honor to them for all of humanity to witness. But them being addressed is a high clue that they know what it means while others might not.

God only attributing purity to them is an important fact, it goes well with many themes in Quran, but at the end, it's also kind of trivial because it's something true of all chosen Ahlulbayts. 

The Surah itself defends Mohammad (s) honor more then any Surah, and it also brings the most controversial issues surrounding him.   It wants to put in perspective and there is no Surah that emphasizes on honoring Mohahmmad (s) then this Surah.

In the 2nd meaning, this phrase would be honoring Mohammad (s) to the highest degree. If for example, he had no successors and no other person was chosen as pure guides for humanity in this nation. If it said "God only desires to make the uncleanness be away from you O Prophet (and nothing else ie. not remove any blessings and want to bestow as much as blessings on you as possible) and to purify you (and no one else) a purification (a unique high level to you)", this verse would be clearly seen to give him the highest status among creation.

What has made this difficult to see for people, is that his family is included in that honor.  It's sheer spell power from devils as well given into it by heedlessness or disbelief, that people can't see the love of God for Mohammad (s) AND his family (a) here.

Other possible meanings given can be:

The only is about saying all the type of wishing of God - all of them amount to the same, he wants it and also absolute decrees it that Ahlulbayt (a) are kept clean and pure.  

This to be honest, is a bit to of a complicated way of saying it. If this was the meaning, many better ways of saying it.

The other is God wishes only by warning the wives, to keep the reputation of Ahlulbayt clear and clean.  Again, this has problems too but somewhat I see it as plausible.  Just the meaning I emphasized on is much appropriate for God to address his favorite creation in his last revelation to humanity.

Support to the meaning I am emphasizing is also supported by hadiths.  It can be, so that no wife is confused, that the event of cloak took place in every house, and God resaid those words and revealed them  in each house, so that every wife testifies to it.

In the house of Saffiya, Mohammad (s) prays for Salawat and the response is this.  A response to bless Mohammad (s) and his family (a) from the emphasized meaning I gave is that 

(1) O Mohammad, you and your family - God doesn't just desire to ward off all uncleanness but bestow as much blessings on you as possible.

(2) He will not remove a single light once bestowed upon you, all blessings on you remain and will grow.

(3) God desires with regard to you and your family, a purity found no where else but in you. 

As for (3) we read in Saheefa Sajjadiya "a blessing that will increase their purity on top of their purity" regarding Angels (a) and so again, the purity level of lower is found in higher, but the higher purity level is not found in lower.

"Mohammad, Ali, Fatima, Hassan, Hussain and 9 Imams from offspring of Hussain" are told thus:

(1) You are the highest blessed in terms of purity, you have a unique level of purity and God wishes to keep it that way forever.

(2) You will never decrease in blessing (nor did he decrease you - verse supports this)

(3) Uncleanness will be kept away from you and never touch your souls.

(4) God wishes to bless you as much as possible.

Combine that with Salawat verse, it can be seen the love of God for these souls, and if we come to them without hasad (Envy), we would bless them constantly, recognizing God's pleasure in that.  He has described his love for these souls to increase in blessings as much as possible, and believers can participate in that wish of God by blessing him.

By the name of God, the (universally) Compassionate, The (extremely) Compassionate; for the unity of the Togetherness; Is their unity in the journey in the winter and summer. So let them Worship the Lord of this household. The one who fed them from hunger and gave them security from fear.

A contention can be about the "le" as the suggests it's talking purpose of something that God wishes this with.  If it was just about the souls of Ahlulbayt (a) and not reputation of them having this status in their eyes, it would be non-sensical the statement.

But from the perspective:

God only desires (by the Quran and sending you as a rope combined with it oh Ahlulbayt) to

(1) In vision of people to make you appear without uncleanness in your souls.
(2) In vision of people to make you recognized as blessed with all blessings in creation and that God wishes to increase you in that and bestow as much blessings as possible.
(3)Having the Highest level of purity in vision of the people out of all creation.

So it's laying out, the purpose of Quran and you being appointed AS FAR AS YOU AHLULBAYT ARE CONCERNED is to make you of the highest purity while also be recognizing as containing all blessings in creation and that God wishes to increase you and never decrease you ever or remove or lessen a single blessing or light on your soul that he bestows in the vision of people.

That is Quran came to honor Ahlulbayt (a) in the vision of humans and Jinn as the highest creation as far ahlulbayt (a) goes.
