Some early Shias did not buy this silly argument. Instead, they argued that the Qur'an was tampered with and Imamah was removed from the Qur'an.

No way would such an important mattet not be included, they argued.

The issue is more obvious than that: OK, one could say the general ideas of leadership could be only alluded to in the Quran, and the other Nusoos would explain that it is Imamah.

Yet, the Quranic narrative as a whole and many specific narratives & rules explicitly go against the Imamah concept, and the rest of the Nusoos double down on that negation. The only way the Twelvers get out of this issue is by claiming total mass fabrication of the Nusoos [i.e. almost the whole Hadith methodology, literature, and its Maa'ni being forged; plus mass forgery of the meanings tied to the words and phrases of the Quran which their 'Imams' apparently know but we don't (a circular argument by the way); plus in some cases aspersions against the Quranic text itself]. It is thus not about becoming a Quranist, but that they have a total rejection of our definitions of 'truth' and the methods to arrive at truth and varying probabilistic levels of knowledge.

Ahlus-Sunnah first looks at the evidence then makes conclusions.  Ahlul-raybi wa'l Bida' makes conclusions then distorts the Qur'an and invents ahadeeth to support their conclusions.

This "silly argument" as you phrase it, is mentioned in a reliable report in Kitab Al-Kafi Al-Shareef.
