The reward is from the perspective of disbelievers in verse 42:23, Mohammad (s) is told to say, what you perceive of me seeking selfish reward from the viewpoint I am false, what is that truly but love of the kinsfolk chosen by God if true. Meaning authority, fame, heightened, moral landscaping, control, all that you see me as seeking selfishly, and monarchy in my offspring through Fatima (a), all that really would be just loving us the family chosen by God because what is that (what you as selfish reward), but the way God sets up a path to him (verse 25:57). And Muwadata includes affection, and doesn't refer to closeness or kinship which are abstract concepts and not subject to affection.
