Extracted from the work Murtaza mutahhri where he tells the story of why Al Khoi stopped teaching tafsir as 'it was too complex & involved many difficulties'. When Al Khoi wa reminded that Al Tabatabai was still teaching tafsir, he responded by saying that the latter had martyred himself by doing so!
Al Khoi went on to become a marjaa but tabatabai didn't as fiqh is more important than the Quran to become a marjaa!
Al Haydari has a video on this problem how tafsir of Quran is hardly taught at all in hawzas.
