Question About the Verse of the Cave
« on: December 28, 2016, 12:34:18 AM »
Allah(سبحانه وتعالى) says:
[9:40] Saheeh International
If you do not aid the Prophet - Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah - that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

I apologize if this is a question that has been answered before, but i understand from this verse that the sakeenah was sent upon the Prophet(صلى الله عليه وآله)?  If this is correct, then why wasn't the sakeenah sent upon the companion of the cave, who was sad/grieving?

Or was the sakeenah sent upon Abi Bakr?

Well, you kind of answered your question there.

Why would Allah (swt) send his sakeenah upon the Prophet (saws), when his sakeenah never left him? And doesn't it make sense that he sends sakeenah upon the one who is grieving?

In Arabic, If someone is stressed and agitated, when this person calms down we say "Sakana" as in he became in a state of tranquility and calmness.

In this sense it makes a lot more sense, that after the Prophet (saw) comforted his companion, then through this he became calm and tranquil, thus God sent his Sakeenah upon him through the words of the Prophet (saw).

What do you think?

The above was my own interpretation based on the clear text of the Qur'an, if we wish to take things to the next step then we must consult the books of Tafsir to find out what the early scholars said.

Before returning to the text books, we can also say that God supported the Prophet (saw) by granting him tranquility and aiding him with angels, this is why the Prophet (saw) had no fears. Abu Bakr on the other hand was worried, so the Prophet (saw) who was already in a state of tranquility and calmness was able to comfort his companion and ease his mind.

Secondly, we can say that since God sent his tranquility upon the Prophet (saw), that doesn't mean he didn't send it upon his companion. In the verse the Prophet (saw) says: "God is with us." meaning God's support is for both, in other words if God's angels are supporting the Prophet (saw) then they are by default supporting his supporter Aba Bakr.

Al-Tabari wrote his interpretation:

Al-Razi writes a detailed analysis:

This makes a lot of sense, since if the Prophet (saw) was scared and worried, why would he tell his companion "Don't be scared"? Rather the Prophet (saw) was never scared since he was promised victory, then he calmed his companion down and so God sent his tranquility upon the grieving companion.

Ibn Kathir writes that the more popular opinion is that it refers to the Prophet (saw) but he mentions that Ibn `Abbas narrates that the Sakeenah has always been with the Prophet (saw) therefore the tranquility was sent upon Aba Bakr:

As far as narrations, I found these:

Habib bin abi Thabit is an early Tabi`ee, he says it's related to Aba Bakr since the Prophet (saw) already has God's tranquility.

`Umar bin al-Khattab narrates from the Prophet (saw) that this was regarding Aba Bakr.

Sa`id bin Jubayr is Ibn `Abbas's student and he says it's related to Aba Bakr as the Sakinah was already with the Prophet (saw).

`Abdullah bin `Abbas says its related to Aba Bakr since the Prophet (saw) had the Sakinah.

These have a lot more weigh than the opinions of later Muhaddithin.

Later Muhaddithin such as Tabari will say there are two opinions, popular one is that it's the Prophet (saw), others say it's Aba Bakr.

However, the narrations are all saying Aba Bakr as quoted above. This also makes more sense as how can a man who himself is perplexed and stressed offer to calm another man down? The Prophet (saw) already had this Sakinah, then God gave his Sakinah to Aba Bakr.
