I heard Rajabali quote this verse to prove the concept of divine appointment of the 12 Imams.
Shakir 6:165] And He it is Who has made you successors in the land and raised some of you above others by (various) grades, that He might try you by what He has given you; surely your Lord is quick to requite (evil), and He is most surely the Forgiving, the Merciful.
[Pooya/Ali Commentary 6:165]
The word khala-if, in this verse, means deputies. Every human being has been created to manifest the divine attributes in his or her life. If one lives in this world, keeping in view this sacred assignment, it will make man reach the glorious heights of divine perfection.
Aqa Mahdi Puya says:
The theory that every believer is a vicegerent of Allah cannot be used to assume that men have the right to select or elect anyone from among themselves to exercise authority on their behalf. The verse clearly says that Allah has raised some of His deputies over others in ranks, on account of their wisdom, piety and total dedication to the cause of Allah (jihad); therefore they should be allowed to exercise the divinely delegated authority, followed and obeyed.
Its strange how the Agha Puya's tafseer says the responsibility includes dedication to Jihad. Yet for the 12er Shia all the Imams till the disappearance of the 12th, the concept of Jihad has been suspended.
So, how does the verse actually fit their interpretation?
Also, I find it very strange that Agha Puya is unable to provide any ahadith reference for most of his interpretations. Instead he is more of a reactionary interpreter.

Farid & Hani or any other brother who knows tafseer, can someone tell me how this verse is supposed to be interpreted? Of course I want the historical context as well.

I couldn't find a context. It is just an open verse. Shias will twist anything about rule in their favour. How is this different?

Simple verse.
Without referring back to a Tafsir. It says, Allah made us humans successors in His lands, thus we as a species have been given power, authority and responsibility over the Lands.
Allah made some of us greater than others in position, some are farmers, some soldiers and others kings.
Through this, Allah shall test us by seeing how we handle this trust and how we behave as farmers, soldiers or kings. Each human will be responsible for whatever position he has acquired.
As for that last Tafsir you quoted from some sectarian Jahil, it's unsupported by the verse. The Jahil concludes things out of his own empty head.

The sad part most of the times they can't even quote their own Imams to support their view.
