Did Umar bin al-Khattab bury his own daughter alive before Islam?

A narration that is often circulated around about 'Umar b. al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) is that before the coming of Islam 'Umar buried his own daughters alive as per the custom of the pagan Arabs of his time.

This narration gives vivid detail of how an innocent little baby girl plays with her father's beard and her father 'Umar b. al-Khattab merciless buries her in the hot scorching desert sand whilst she is still alive!

No doubt one of the greatest sins in Islam is to kill an innocent soul especially that of a helpless child, but was 'Umar b. al-Khattab really ever guilty of this crime even before the coming Islam?
