Narrated Hudhaifah [may Allah be pleased with him]:
"We were sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said: 'I do not know how long I will be with you, so stick to the two after me,' and he signalled towards Abu Bakr and 'Umar."

Surely this is a much clearer sign of their right to Khilafah and their deserving and recommendation to appoint them by the Prophet than any Hadith the Shi'ah can give.

If Abu Bakr was the dearest of men to the Prophet (s) and was superior than Omar in fact that all the companions in virtues and qualities, then how could he say: “If there were to be a Prophet after me, it would be ‘Umar”? Why would it not be Abu Bakr? Then why wasn't Omar the first Khalif?

As noted in Sunni Muslim historical chronicles, when Imam ‘Ali was just ten years old, the Prophet Muhammad invited his close family to Islam and asked them:

Which of you, then, will help me in this, and be my brother, mine executor and my successor amongst you?’ All remained silent, except for the youthful ʿAlī who spoke up: ‘O Prophet of God, I will be thy helper in this.’ The Prophet then placed his hand on ʿAlī’s neck and said, ‘This is my brother, mine executor and my successor amongst you. Hearken unto him and obey him.’
