`Ali's closest companions never knew the narrations of virtue

al-Salamu `Aleykum,

You all know the long lists of narrations the Shia post online from both Sunni and Shia books, narrations that are in praise of `Ali, mentioning his virtues and his merits.

Here is an authentic narration from Musannaf ibn abi Shaybah, in which some Koufans come to visit `Abdul-Rahman ibn abi Layla al-Kufi who was one of `Ali's closest companions and a leader from the leaders of his Shia (political group), during their Majlis(sitting) they begin mentioning stories about the virtue and praise of `Ali, listen to what Ibn abi Layla's reaction is.

[`Abdullah ibn Numayr told us, he said: al-A`mash has told us, from `Amro bin Murrah, from `Abdul-Rahman bin abi Layla that: He heard what the people were saying with regards to `Ali (meaning narrations of virtue), so he told them: "We have sat with `Ali, and we ate and drank with him, and we were handling the affairs (of the government) for him, but I never heard him say anything from what these people are saying." Then he said: "It is only sufficient for you to say: The cousin of the messenger of Allah (saw), and husband to his daughter, he witnessed the Bay`ah of al-Radhwan, and he witnessed Badr."]

So notice the benefit dear reader, and also remember the narration when `Ali mentions his own virtue, and he asks the companions to confirm that the Prophet (saw) said on Ghadeer:"Whosoever loves me, shall love `Ali." Among the listeners was abu al-Tufayl, a very young companion and one of the best and most loyal of `Ali's Shia (political group), after he heard this narration he was surprised as he never heard it before and he went to ask Zayd ibn Arqam to confirm.

This shows you that one of the best and biggest companions of `Ali, abu al-Tufayl who fought alongside him in his wars, he never heard of Hadith al-Ghadeer until one year before `Ali's death, and according to Ibn abi Layla, they probably never heard of most of his virtues.

This is the case of the Tabi`een or very young Sahabah, but of course the senior Sahabah have heard his authentic virtues directly from the Prophet (saw).
